The Best Time to Start
Summer has more daylight and better weather. The kind of energy that makes you want to go outside, move, and try something new. Summer has everything you need to start something new.
Here's a simple playbook for building healthy habits for summer that last.
The Playbook
Step 1: Pick one habit.
An investment as small as 2 minutes per day can have a huge ROI by the time summer is over. The key is setting yourself up for consistency.
Write down one thing you're grateful for. Stretch in the morning. Spend two minutes meditating. Cut your screen time by 30 minutes. Whatever it is, make ONE commitment that is small enough to withstand vacation schedules and summer chaos.
Trying to build multiple habits at once is why most people build none.
Step 2: Attach it to something you already do.
Don't add the habit to a blank space in your day, attach it to something that already happens.
I will drink one cup of water before I drink coffee.
I will go for a 10-minute lunch walk.
I will read 10 pages in bed every night.
The existing behavior is the trigger, the new habit rides on top of it.
Step 3: Make it visible.
Out of sight is out of mind. Always.
Put the habit somewhere you can see it every morning and track it. Add a star sticker on your Big A## Habit Tracker every day you do it. Achieving a streak that you can see triggers the rewards center and it will push you when you need it most.
Step 4: Make it smaller than you think it should be.
Reading 5 pages counts. A 10-minute walk counts. One page of journaling counts.
10 minutes of reading will eventually turn into 30. But telling yourself 10 minutes lowers the barrier to entry so you pick up the book.
Do 1 push before I brush my teeth.
Write 1 line in my journal with coffee.
Step 5: Miss one day. Never miss two.
You will miss a day, that's okay. Something comes up, a trip runs long, the plan falls apart.
Move on, give yourself some grace and remember that perfection is the enemy of progress. Missing a day isn’t failure. Your here and you’re putting in the work!
A Lifestyle Reset.
Summer shifts the focus away from restrictive resolutions. Small, flexible, daily routines are how better habits get built… and the season's natural energy makes it easier than any other time of year.
