Helping Your Student-Athlete Without Adding to the Load

María Fernanda Estrada • Aug 18, 2026

The average sports parent spends 3 hours and 23 minutes every day supporting their athlete.

Practices. Homework. Travel. Meals in the car. Weekend tournaments.

The schedule fills up faster than anyone expects, especially when school and sports aren't on the same system.

How to organize kids' sports schedules

The school isn't checking the league schedule. The league isn't checking the school calendar. You're the only one seeing both.

Start by putting school and sports on your Big Class Calendar.

When a tournament lands the same week as finals, you'll see it long before it becomes a problem.

Protect the day with nothing on it

Recovery should be a constant.

A day with no practice, no game talk, just being a kid, matters as much as anything else on the calendar.

Recovery is part of the season, not a break from it.

Put that day on the calendar before something else takes its place.

What needs to be visible

Give each part of the season its own color.

🟡 Yellow: test and project dates.

🔵 Blue: practices, games, and tournaments.

🟢 Green: travel days

🟣 Purple: family plans and school breaks.

🔴 Red: recovery days and time off for the FUN stuff

Protect more than the schedule

You can't make school and sports agree with each other.

You can put them on the same system, so the season doesn't take over the year, and the year doesn't take over the kid underneath it.

Student athlete burnout is common, but as a parent or coach, you can help make the season organized, and more important... intentional.
