Kevin’s Rule

Fun First, the Taylor Prokes Take

A short story from our co-founder, Taylor Prokes

YOU SHOULD PROBABLY PLAN MORE FUN INTO YOUR LIFE.

Most people plan their work, their meetings, their deadlines.

And then whatever time’s left…that’s where life goes.

If you relate to this, you gotta step it up.

There’s a concept we come back to a lot:

Kevin’s Rule. Every other month, you plan something you wouldn’t normally do. A trip to the beach, a hike, a random class, or a cool place you’ve never been.

You put it on the calendar ahead of time, so it actually happens.

Those “I love my life” moments don’t always happen by accident, they come from the things you decide to show up for.

Last month in Austin, that’s basically what we did, just at a bigger scale.

We threw a “No Phones Party.”

When you walked in, you put your phone in a bag. The first 10 people who arrived didn’t know each other, so they had two options: stand there alone or walk up to someone and start talking.

And they did.

At some point, you couldn’t tell who came together and who had just met five minutes ago.

We had a DJ, jello shots (300 of them…HA!), people dancing, singing

IT WAS SO FUN.

The next day, my Instagram and LinkedIn feeds were filled with people talking about how noble and refreshing it was to have a night like that.

The same weekend, we put up a 50-foot bright blue wall that says:

THE BIG ASS WALL.

It’s objectively funny. People stop with zero context and take pictures, crossing the street just to get a photo. They don’t really know what it is, they just know it made them feel something.

We tied it into everything our brand was doing that weekend: invitations to the phone free party, giveaways and brand collabs. People showed up, participated, brought friends.

The Monday after our party, we hosted 3 mile fun run.

400 people showed up at 8am before work. People ran, walked, and some showed up with strollers.

You didn’t have to talk to anyone, but after running together for an hour, the conversations just happen easier. People hung out for hours afterwards.

That’s really the point of all of this.

Not just to throw events, but to create moments that are fun. The kind you put on your (Big A##) calendar and show up to, even alone.

FUN FIRST.

Everything else follows.

Pick something for next month and put it on your calendar. Don’t overthink it.

And if it’s something you wouldn’t normally do, send it to us.
